Project Update

At the Council meeting held September 27, 2022, Leamington Council approved the Erie Street Streetscaping functional design and directed Administration to gather public comments regarding the Talbot Street streetscaping design.

The Municipality has developed an alternative design option for the Talbot Street portion of the streetscaping project based on feedback received in the first public engagement process.

Alternative Design Option for Talbot Street

The alternative design option for Talbot Street will allow for an increase in on-street parking by approximately 26 spaces to a proposed total of 92 spaces. This is achieved by the construction of reverse angle parking on the south side of Talbot Street and the narrowing of the sidewalk.

Why Reverse Angle Parking?

In addition to allowing for an increase in on-street parking spaces, reverse angle parking has many benefits including:

1) Improved visibility and increased field of vision. When leaving the parking space, motorists are able to see oncoming traffic.

2) Improved safety for children. Car doors open in a manner that directs children to the back of the vehicle, ushering them toward the sidewalk rather than the street.

3) Improved safety for cyclists. Car doors that open will not result in the “dooring” of cyclists, and as vehicles exit their parking stall, they are able to see cyclists in the roadway.

4) Improved loading and unloading. Trunks are adjacent to the sidewalk and open car doors offer protection from the street, allowing loading and unloading to occur at the curb instead of in the travelled roadway.

Have Your Say

Public feedback is important to the success of the project and will help determine the final layout. Design features and the proposed options for the active transportation facilities to be constructed are available for review and comment in the survey.
