FAQs
When will bi-weekly garbage collection begin?
Bi-weekly garbage collection will begin on Monday, January 11, 2027. Garbage will be collected every other Monday throughout the Municipality.
The 2027 collection schedule will be provided before the new service begins.
Why is garbage collection changing in 2027?
Leamington’s existing garbage collection contract expires on December 31, 2026, requiring a new collection contract beginning in 2027.
With the introduction of weekly Green Bin collection in November 2026, and the provincial requirement to meet landfill diversion targets, Leamington Council approved transitioning to bi-weekly garbage collection beginning in January 2027.
What were the estimated costs of weekly and bi-weekly garbage collection?
Based on the information presented to Council, maintaining weekly garbage collection under the new contract would result in an estimated 39 percent increase in collection costs in 2027, compared with approximately 7 percent with bi-weekly collection.
What is changing with my garbage collection?
Beginning in January 2027, garbage will be collected every other week instead of weekly, and all garbage collection across the Municipality will take place on Mondays.
Other garbage collection requirements will remain the same, including the number of bags or containers permitted and weight limits.
Will my garbage collection day change?
Yes. Currently, garbage collection days vary between urban and rural areas of Leamington.
Beginning January 11, 2027, all garbage collection across the Municipality will take place every other Monday.
Residents should refer to the 2027 collection calendar once available for their scheduled collection dates.
How much garbage can I put out on my collection day?
Residents can continue to set out up to four garbage bags or containers on their scheduled collection day.
Each bag or container must not weigh more than 20 kg (45 lb).
Do I need a new garbage container?
No. Residents can continue to use their existing garbage containers or bags. You don't need to use a specific type of container for garbage collection.
Is what I can put in the garbage changing?
Yes. Organics are to be disposed of through the Green Bin program and should not be placed in the garbage. Similar to current requirements, recyclable materials, yard waste, white goods and other non-collectable waste should not be disposed of in the garbage.
Residents can also check whether an item is accepted through the regional Green Bin program or through the recycling program before placing it in the garbage.
Has recycling changed?
Yes. Recycling is now managed by Circular Materials and uses a single-stream system, which means you can place accepted recyclable materials together in one Blue Box.
The recycling program also accepts additional materials that were not previously accepted. Residents are encouraged to review the current list of accepted materials to ensure recyclable items go in the Blue Box rather than the garbage.
Recycling will continue to be collected every other week.
For the current list of accepted recyclable materials and information about recycling collection, visit Circular Materials.
Will garbage and recycling be collected during the same week?
The 2027 garbage and recycling collection schedules are still being finalized. We will add this information once the schedules are confirmed.
What happens if I miss my garbage collection day?
Residents who miss their scheduled garbage collection must keep their garbage until the next bi-weekly collection or take it to a public drop-off depot for disposal.
Can I put out large or bulky items?
Yes. Residents can continue to set out up to two bulky items on their scheduled garbage collection day. With the new collection schedule, bulky items will be collected every other week with regular garbage.
What if I have more garbage than the four-container limit?
You can take garbage above the four-container limit to a public drop-off depot for disposal.
What about diapers and other waste that cannot go in the Green Bin?
Council directed Administration to prepare a report regarding potential options and associated costs for diapers and other non-organic waste that may present challenges with bi-weekly collection.
Council has not made a decision on an additional collection service. Information will be added to this page following Council’s consideration of the report.
Will there be a special collection for diapers?
No decision has been made.
Administration will report back to Council on potential options and associated costs for diapers and other non-organic waste.
What can I put in my Green Bin?
EWSWA administers the regional Green Bin program. Information about accepted materials and how to use the Green Bin is available through EWSWA.
What time should I put my garbage out?
Garbage must be set out by 6:00 AM on your scheduled collection day. Collection may occur at any time between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM
Residents are reminded to be patient as the new bi-weekly garbage collection schedule is rolled out. Garbage may be collected at a different time than residents are typically used to. Residents are asked to leave their garbage out during the times listed above to ensure the contractor collects it.
